Addis Ababa, March 2, 2025.- On March 2, 2025, a ceremony was held at the Adwa Museum in Addis Ababa to commemorate the 129th anniversary of Adwa's historic victory. The activity was attended by senior government officials and the diplomatic community based in the capital. Cuba's ambassador to the African Union, Lucas Domingo Hernández, attended the event on behalf of the Cuban diplomatic mission, reaffirming the historical ties and solidarity between Cuba and Ethiopia.
During the ceremony, Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie stressed the importance of Adwa's victory as a symbol of resistance and national unity, "it is a symbol for Africans and all blacks that demonstrates the heroism of Ethiopians, especially the strong participation and political wisdom of women," he stressed.
For his part, the former chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, stressed that the battle of Adwa was not only a victory for Ethiopia, but for the entire African continent, inspiring liberation movements in Africa and in the world and said: "We must remember that Adwa was not simply a military victory, it was a victory for African self-determination, a victory for the dignity of our people and, most importantly, a victory for the idea that Africa can chart its own destiny free from interference from foreign powers."
The Battle of Adwa was a milestone in African resistance against European colonialism, demonstrating the ability of African peoples to defend their independence and self-determination.
Through its official Twitter account, the Cuban Diplomatic Mission in Ethiopia congratulated the Ethiopian people on this significant date, highlighting the importance of Adwa as a symbol of African resistance and self-determination.
