Addis Ababa, February 25, 2026.- The Ambassador of Cuba to Ethiopia, Meylin Suárez Álvarez, participated in the activities organized by the Economic Commission for Africa on the occasion of International Mother Language Day, reaffirming Cuba's commitment to cultural diversity.
On February 25, UNECA commemorated this significant date, highlighting the role of languages as carriers of history, traditions, values, and ancestral knowledge, as well as their contribution to strengthening the identity of peoples.
International Mother Language Day is celebrated every February 21 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and foster multilingualism worldwide. It was proclaimed by UNESCO in 1999 and subsequently recognized by the United Nations General Assembly, underscoring the importance of preserving mother tongues as an essential part of cultural heritage, identity and inclusive education.
During the day, speeches by diplomatic representatives, cultural presentations, and exchange sessions were held, highlighting the linguistic richness of peoples and the need to safeguard languages.
