Cuba participates in IAEA High Level Panel on the relationship between laboratories and nuclear technologies.

Vienna, November 28 - Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Cuba, Eduardo Martinez Diaz, participated in the high-level panel of the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology and Applications and the Technical Cooperation Program of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) entitled: “From the Laboratory to the Field: The Unique Features of the IAEA”.

During Panel 6.1 of the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology and Applications and the IAEA Technical Cooperation Program, Ministers and authorities from Croatia, Cuba, Namibia, Nepal, and Syria presented experiences and success stories in the management of scientific laboratories and their contributions to development through irradiation technologies.

In his speech, Martínez Díaz highlighted Cuba's main advances in the use of irradiated techniques combined with biomolecules for the treatment of cancer, as well as for the control of drugs and vaccines.

The senior Cuban executive listed the contributions made by Cuba in this field through the implementation of a combined cycle between the biotechnological field and nuclear technology.  In this regard, he highlighted the development of mono-cloned antibodies for the treatment of cancer, the combined studies of irradiation with Heberprot-P for foot cancer, the neuroprotective activity of erythropoietin, the trials of vaccines against covid-19, among others.

The IAEA Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology and Applications and the Technical Cooperation Program, held November 26-28, allowed the authorities of the Agency's Member States to discuss advances in the use of nuclear technologies and applications and to propose technical cooperation mechanisms to strengthen development.
