As the main chair of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), India hosted GPAI member countries and world experts at the India-IA Global Summit held in New Delhi in July. Within the framework of the Summit, Cuba was invited to participate in a round table dedicated to “Artificial Intelligence for Global Good: Empowering the Global South”. Cuba's First Deputy Minister of Communications, Wilfredo Gonzalez Vidal, participated virtually, and the Second Secretary of the Cuban Embassy in India, Malena Rojas Medina, was present.
The Cuban First Deputy Minister intervened through a video message in which he highlighted the unquestionable positive impact that the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) generates in society. However, he insisted that it is required to be used with international standards that safeguard the sovereignty of countries and the integrity of citizens. He also stressed the need to design inclusive and respectful policies under the principle of equality between nations, also ensuring its exploitation for peaceful purposes.
He pointed out the progress made in Cuba in matters related to AI, despite the fact that the U.S. blockade remains the main impediment to a better flow of information and wider access to the Internet and information technologies in general by the Cuban people.
Finally, he ratified the willingness of the Cuban government and the Ministry of Communications to collaborate with the international community on issues related to the development of artificial intelligence, based on respectful dialogue, scientific and productive advances.
