Addis Ababa, February 12, 2025.- The Republic of Cuba, through its representative the Permanent Observer Ambassador of Cuba to the African Union, Lucas Domingo Hernández Polledo, participated as an observer country in the opening session of the 46th Executive Council of the African Union (AU), which took place on February 12, 2025 at the organization's headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
This meeting brings together foreign ministers of the AU member states and its main objective is to discuss strategies for the development of the continent and strengthen cooperation in key areas such as peace, security, economy and regional integration. In this edition, the Executive Board will address crucial issues such as the implementation of the African Union's Agenda 2063, which charts the path towards the continent's sustainable development. Elections will also be held for key positions within the AU Commission, the organisation's administrative body, whose members play a key role in the implementation of its policies and programmes.
Cuba's participation as an observer country reaffirms its historical ties with Africa and its commitment to South-South cooperation. The Caribbean nation maintains a close relationship with several African countries in sectors such as health, education and professional training, which has strengthened friendship and solidarity between the two regions.
The AU Executive Council is a key decision-making body of the organization and prepares the topics that will be discussed at the next Summit of Heads of State and Government.
Cuba's presence in this forum reflects its interest in continuing to collaborate with African countries in the search for joint solutions to the challenges of development and regional integration.
