In the first session of the event, under the theme "Towards a new development paradigm", the diplomat highlighted Cuba's commitment to international solidarity and cooperation with the countries of the South, which he assured was a fundamental part of Cuba's Foreign Policy. He explained Cuba's history of collaboration in the fight against colonialism and in support of the development of peoples. He highlighted Cuba's international medical cooperation and the progress achieved in recent years, in spite, he said, of the economic difficulties we have faced due to the tightening of the blockade.
Finally, he addressed the main results of the concluded Summit of the G77 and China in Havana, and the need for a change in the global order and financial architecture to respond to the needs and interests of the countries of the South.
