On April 30, the Embassy of Cuba had the honour of participating in a significant meeting of the Cross-Party Group on Cuba at the Scottish Parliament, with First Secretary Pablo Ginarte offering a wide-ranging update on the current situation in Cuba and the importance of continued Scottish solidarity.
During the meeting, Pablo expressed Cuba’s deep appreciation for Scotland’s principled and enduring friendship, especially in light of the escalating impact of the U.S. blockade and the ongoing inclusion of Cuba on the U.S. list of State Sponsors of Terrorism.
He outlined how these punitive measures extend far beyond the borders of the United States, affecting Cuba’s international trade, banking, and access to essential goods. Despite this, Cuba continues to achieve great progress in health, education, and science, thanks to the resilience of its people and the strength of its socialist principles.
In his remarks, Pablo urged MSPs and friends of Cuba to advocate for practical action in support of ending the blockade and securing Cuba’s removal from the terrorism list — steps that would enable Cuba to develop more freely and deepen its cooperation with nations like Scotland.
We thank MSPs Carol Mochan (Convener), Katy Clark, Maggie Chapman, Mercedes Villalba, and Colin Beattie for their presence and support, as well as Dr. Helen Yaffe and the Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign for their tireless advocacy and commitment.
This meeting was yet another reminder that the people of Cuba are not alone, and that solidarity across borders can be a powerful force for justice and peace.
