Upper Austria, May 10. – Cuba participated this Sunday in the main commemoration of the 81st anniversary of the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp, one of the greatest symbols of Nazi horror during World War II. The annual event, which brought together dozens of international delegations and Austrian political forces, also served as a platform to denounce the U.S. blockade and reaffirm solidarity with the island.
In the solemn march that wound through the memorial grounds, Cuba was represented in the block of national delegations by the staff of the Cuban Embassy in Austria and a delegation from the executive board of the Austria-Cuba Friendship Association (ÖKG). The Cuban presence, increasingly visible and respected at this historic event, pays tribute to the memory of the five Cuban brigadistas who were murdered in that concentration camp during World War II.
In the bloc of Austrian political forces, numerous contingents marched carrying banners alluding to Cuba, the rejection of the blockade, and the need to strengthen solidarity efforts with the island.
Every year, Cuba participates in the main events commemorating the liberation of the Mauthausen concentration camp. At each event, the island not only honors the fallen but also builds a symbolic bridge between the anti-fascist struggle of the 20th century and the contemporary resistance against policies of blockade, unilateralism, and interference. Cuba’s presence in Mauthausen each year is a statement of principle: Never again fascism!
