Monrovia, October 24, 2020 - The Head of the Cuban Diplomatic Mission in Liberia, Mercedes L. Martínez Herrera, attended to the celebration of the United Nations Day, which took place in Monrovia, in the building of this international organization.
With the theme "The future we want, the United Nations we need: reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism by confronting COVID-19 through multilateral action", the celebration of this day in Liberia took place, with the participation of President George Weah.
In his address, the Liberian leader noted that the world is safer today and more prosperous thanks to the UN, which testifies to the foresight of its visionaries in maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations and being a center for harmonizing the actions of nations; adopted on June 25 and formally enacted on October 24, 1945.
It recognized that during the decades of its existence, the UN has made remarkable progress around the world, particularly in the pillar of peace and security, and that its peacekeeping missions, including the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), have brought law and order to intractable conflict situations. He added that the United Nations remains the beacon of fundamental human rights for all, including freedom of expression, gender equality and women's empowerment. He added that with the help of the UN, Liberia fought Ebola and is now resisting COVID-19.
The Liberian executive president indicated that his government remains committed to the UN to ensure world peace and defend basic human rights.
UN Day marks the anniversary of the 1945 entry into force of the UN Charter. "With the ratification of this founding document by most of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially entered into force. October 24 has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the UN General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by member states as a holiday.
