Cuba in the Spotlight: Cuban Ambassador Discusses the Island’s Current Challenges

Vienna, May 20, 2026. – The Cuban Ambassador to Austria, Pablo Berti Oliva, participated in the public event “Cuba in the Spotlight – Current Events and Prospects,” held at the “RedPoint” in St. Pölten before a large group of residents of that city and representatives of solidarity organizations.

The event, organized by the St. Pölten District Branch in cooperation with the Renner Institute, the Austrian Trade Union Federation (BSA), the SPÖ Youth Wing, and the Austria-Cuba Friendship Association (ÖKG), facilitated a direct and in-depth exchange on the current reality in Cuba. The Ambassador addressed the country’s major economic and political challenges, the collective punishment against the Cuban people represented by the intensification of the blockade—particularly the energy blockade—and the impact of the executive orders issued by the U.S. president on January 29 and May 1, 2026.

The evening included exchanges with the audience in a frank dialogue, as well as a performance by the music group “Primer Distrito,” composed of Cubans residing in Austria.

The event demonstrated the Austrian people’s growing interest in learning firsthand about the reality of life in Cuba and joining forces in the struggle against the blockade and for the island’s sovereignty. It reaffirmed once again that solidarity with Cuba transcends borders and that the Cuban people are not alone in their struggle for sovereignty and independence.
