Cuban Ambassador Exchanges with Peter Katjavivi, Namibian Politician and Historian

Solidarity between the peoples of Cuba and Namibia, cemented by the deep brotherhood that united Commander Fidel Castro and Founding Father San Nujoma, was a recurring theme in the warm exchange held by Ambassador Sergio Vigoa de La Uz with Professor Peter Katjavivi, former Speaker of the Namibian National Assembly.

In an informal and relaxed atmosphere, Katjavivi, also a member of the Board of Directors of the Hage Geingob Presidential Center, recounted experiences from his various visits to the largest of the Antilles, whose shared history with his homeland he knows very well.

Cuito Cuanavale, the battle that removed apartheid regime and determined the independence of Namibia, was a topic of exchange and reflection.

Vigoa de la Uz talked about the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry's idea of producing a film about this war, the script of which has already been written, and the important role Namibia could play in bringing the project to fruition.

Katjavivi told the ambassador about his meeting with Cuban combatants who participated in this conflict during his visit to the island in 2024, a moment that reinforced his interest in paying tribute to the brave men of Cuito Cuanavale.

The politician and historian, former rector of the University of Namibia, believes that this military conflict, in which Cuban combatants, Angolan troops, SWAPO troops, and members of the African National Congress led South Africa to its inevitable defeat and to the negotiating table, constitutes a symbol that must be recounted so that this segment of the history of our peoples may be known and revered by future generations.

The ambassador stated that the joint project will be a special tribute to the Commander-in-Chief, as part of the global commemoration program for the Centenary of his birth, which runs from August of this year until November 2026.

Also present at the meeting was Isabel Katjavivi, daughter of the Namibian politician and Deputy Director of Artistic Promotion and Creative Industry at the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Sports, Youth, and Culture.
