Cuban Ambassador Participates in Key Meeting for Inclusive Peace in Africa

Addis Ababa, February 19, 2025.- The Cuban Ambassador to Ethiopia, Meylin Suárez Álvarez, recently participated in a joint meeting organized by Amani Africa, the Norwegian Embassy to the African Union (AU) and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS). The event, entitled "Building Partnerships for Inclusive and Sustainable Peace", was held at Addis Ababa University and brought together leading researchers and experts in the field of peace and security in Africa, as well as diplomatic corps accredited in Addis.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide was the main guest of the meeting, accompanied by a high-level panel that included:

  • H.E. Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to the AU and Head of the UN Office to the AU (UNOAU).
  • H.E. Bineta Diop, Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the AU Commission on Women, Peace and Security.
  • H.E. William Azumah Awinador-Kanyirige, Senior Adviser on Governance and Peacebuilding, Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, AU Commission.

The event was moderated by Solomon Ayele, Founding Director of Amani Africa.

During the meeting, key issues on the promotion of peace and security in Africa were addressed, highlighting the importance of establishing strategic alliances between governments, international organizations and civil society. The inclusion of women and youth in peacebuilding processes was also emphasized, recognizing their fundamental role in the transformation of conflicts and the creation of more just and inclusive societies.

The event called for joint action between African nations and their international partners to build a more peaceful and inclusive future for the continent. The participation of the Cuban Embassy in the event reaffirmed Cuba's commitment to peace and security in Africa, as well as its willingness to collaborate in initiatives that promote development and stability in the region.
