Port of Spain, April 20, 2026. The Ambassador of Cuba to Trinidad and Tobago, Gustavo Veliz Olivares, paid a courtesy visit to the Reverend Claude Berkeley, Bishop of the Anglican Church.
During the meeting, both parties exchanged views on the current situation in Cuba, particularly the impact of the tightening of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on the country, further aggravated by the Executive Order issued on January 29 by President Donald Trump.
Reverend Berkeley expressed his solidarity with the Cuban people and conveyed his interest in keeping his congregation informed about the humanitarian crisis that, in his view, is being imposed on Cuba, as well as the actions being undertaken to address it.
For his part, the Ambassador expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome at the Diocese headquarters in Port of Spain. He also shared perspectives on Church–State relations in Cuba, highlighting the role of Christian churches in supporting the country’s social development.
