African countries, and Liberia being one of the first in this regard, have very high percentages of young people in their populations. This is their greatest asset, stated Dr. Leo E. Tiah, Executive Director of the Liberian Chapter of the Network of Young Parliamentarians, at the Cuban Embassy in Monrovia.
Ambassador Dr. Indira López Argüelles welcomed the young leader and noted that Cuba is one of the countries where the harmful effects of unilateral measures, sanctions, and blockades severely impact young people and children. Eighty percent of its population was born under the current policies of harassment and blockade imposed by the United States, which is one of the reasons for the island's commitment to International Law, Multilateralism, and peace.
Mr. Leo outlined some of his organization's initiatives to influence decision-making processes and to raise youth issues within government spheres and institutions. The Cuban diplomat urged Ambassador Tiah to learn about the development of Cuban cooperation programs in health, education, sports, and cultural development, which constitute an essential pillar of Cuban foreign policy, reflecting its solidarity and internationalism with the peoples of the developing world, particularly those in Africa.
