On the morning of October 28, in Hanoi, the Cuban Embassy in Vietnam held a press conference to provide information about the country's submission of a draft resolution to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), calling for an end to the economic, trade, and financial blockade imposed on Cuba.
Speaking at the press conference, Cuban Ambassador to Vietnam Rogelio Polanco Fuentes stated that the discussion and voting on the resolution will take place on October 28-29 at the UN headquarters in New York. This marks the 34th time since 1992 that Cuba has submitted this resolution to the UNGA, and over the years, the draft has garnered widespread support from the international community. In 2024, a similar resolution was passed with 187 votes in favour and 2 against.
The Ambassador expressed confidence that this year's vote will continue to receive support from the majority of member states, while highlighting that the resolution calls on countries to adhere to the UN Charter and the principles of international free trade.
According to Ambassador Rogelio Polanco Fuentes, the prolonged economic and financial restrictions over the decades have significantly impacted Cuba's socio-economic life, affecting sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, energy, tourism, and biotechnology. Specifically, from February 2024 to February 2025, Cuba estimates losses exceeding 7 billion USD.
However, the Ambassador affirmed that despite these challenges, Cuba continues to strive for social stability, develop biotechnology and healthcare sectors, and expand international cooperation.
At the press conference, Ambassador Fuentes also expressed appreciation for Vietnam's long-standing and consistent support for Cuba at international forums, including Vietnam's regular backing of resolutions calling for an end to the embargo, as well as humanitarian support and bilateral cooperation in various fields.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Government and people of Vietnam, as well as to all peace-loving and justice-seeking nations, for always standing by and supporting Cuba,” emphasized the Cuban Ambassador.
