Cuban ambassadors meet with UNESCO Director in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, November 17, 2025.- The Director of the UNESCO Office in Addis Ababa, Rita Bissoonauth, met with Cuban Ambassadors Lucas Domingo Hernández (to the African Union) and Meylin Suárez (to Ethiopia). The meeting provided an opportunity to renew the historical ties between Cuba and UNESCO in Africa and to explore new avenues for cultural, academic and heritage collaboration.

Both sides agreed to strengthen the dissemination of Cuban contributions on the history of colonialism, slavery and the transatlantic trade; promote exchanges between museums; facilitate the arrival of Cuban artists and specialists to the continent; and connect Cuban restoration schools with their African counterparts.

UNESCO also confirmed the participation of the Cuban Ambassador to the African Union in the high-level Roundtable on Restitution as a Cultural Right, on December 10, a topic of increasing relevance in international debates on memory, historical justice and cultural reparations.
