The delegation of Cuba formed by the compañeras Adriana Nirvia Silvente Milhet, Officer of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples and Ofelia García Campuzano was received at the seat of the Federal Parliament of Austria by Robert Laimer, Federal Deputy of the Fraction of the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ ).
The Cuban delegation offered extensive information on the situation of the territory illegally occupied more than a century ago by the US Naval Base in Guantánamo, against the will of the Cuban people.
Likewise, the compañeras mentioned that the establishment of foreign military bases in the territory of other countries against the will of the interested parties constitutes a violation of national sovereignty, and is incompatible with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. They mentioned that these activities and meetings are part of the demands for the return of the territory, and of the international campaign against the Foreign Military Bases, within which an International Seminar in Guantanamo has been systematized since 2010.
The visitors insisted on the importance of publicizing and sensitizing the friends of Cuba and the whole world, regarding the situation suffered by the people of Caimanera and the Guantánamo region due to the permanence of a military base in their territory, which prevents its normal economic development and the enjoyment of the benefits of its Bay, one of the largest in the Latin American and Caribbean region.
The Austrian Parliamentarian thanked the important information offered by the Cuban delegation, which allowed a greater understanding of the issue and reiterated its support for Cuba's right to claim the territory illegally occupied in Guantánamo.
The meeting was also attended by Jessica Müller and Hermann Pernestorfer, President and Secretary General of the Association of Friendship Austria-Cuba (ÖKG) and Marieta García Jordán, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Cuba in Austria.
