Vienna, November 27- The Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Cuba, Dr. Eduardo Martinez Diaz, met with the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Organization (CTBTO), Dr. Robert Floyd, as part of the program of his working visit to Vienna.
The meeting took place less than a month after the Executive Secretary was re-elected for a second term at the head of the Preparatory Organization, for which reason Cuba congratulated him on his re-election and expressed its willingness to work together to achieve the goal of the total elimination of nuclear testing.
During the meeting, the Cuban Vice Prime Minister presented an overview of the existing links between Cuba and the CTBTO, and the possibility of expanding them. In addition, the Cuban leader reiterated the invitation for Dr. Floyd to visit Cuba.
Cuba was the 185th country to sign, and the 169th to ratify, the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, after depositing its instrument of ratification on February 4, 2021 with the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) in New York.
With a network of more than 300 certified facilities, the CTBTO records data that can be used, in addition to its core mandate, for other purposes such as disaster mitigation, earthquake monitoring, tsunami warning or eventual radioactivity leaks in nuclear accidents.
