By chance, they were born on the same date, June 14, although in two different centuries. On this day, 83 years apart, Major General Antonio Maceo was born in 1845 and Major Ernesto Guevara in 1928. One in Santiago de Cuba; the other, in the Argentine city of Rosario.
Tradition makes this date a day to unite the legacy of two guides, to make the thoughts of these two heroes our own and to search for the essence of their revolutionary thoughts.
The enormous similarities between the two are related to essential issues, although it is striking that they are present in two figures with such different features, marked by distance in time, place of birth, profession, origin and social background.
The ideals brought them together in the same cause: the battle for the freedom of Cuba, the native land of the former and the nationality that the latter, a native of Argentina, conquered through his merits, when he was declared by the grateful people, a Cuban citizen by birth. And the new homeland called him forever as his comrades in struggle renamed him: Che.
Their lives had much in common: the disposition to fight without being defeated by adversity, the military genius born in the heat of battle, and the intransigent defense of the total independence of the land for which they had decided until death if necessary.
The occasion was the right time to shoot the documentary "Che Guevara, where you never imagine it" of the series Cuba: Roads of Revolution. The documentary is a synthesis with unpublished images that bring us closer to this exceptional man who transcended his generation and comes to this day as a reference of capacity for sacrifice, courage, severity and tenderness.
