On the 158th anniversary of the beginning of Cuba’s struggle for independence, the Consulate General of Cuba in Toronto led the official flag-raising ceremony at Toronto City Hall, Canada. The event brought together members of the consular corps, representatives of organizations in solidarity with Cuba, members of the Communist Party of Canada and the Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist), as well as members of the Cuban community residing in the city.
During the ceremony, Julio Fonseca, president of the Juan Gualberto Gómez Association of Cuban Residents in Toronto, addressed the participants and denounced the policy of maximum pressure imposed by the United States government on Cuba and Cuban families. He affirmed that Cubans who love their homeland will not abandon it and will continue to defend their right to exist freely and sovereignly.
The keynote address was delivered by Cuba’s Consul General, Víctor Manuel García Sánchez, who recalled the historical significance of October 10, 1868, marking the beginning of Cuba’s struggle for independence. He also highlighted the legacy of Fidel Castro Ruz, the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, during the year commemorating the centenary of his birth.
The diplomat thanked Cubans residing in Canada who continue to support the Cuban Revolution and acknowledged the importance of the solidarity that the Canadian people have shown toward the Island. He also emphasized the longstanding bonds of friendship and bilateral relations between Cuba and Canada.
In his closing remarks, he reaffirmed that Cuba’s independence and sovereignty are non-negotiable principles, fundamental pillars in building a society based on social justice, ethics, solidarity, and internationalism.
The significant participation of the Cuban community and friends of Cuba in Toronto reaffirmed the bonds of identity, commitment, and solidarity that unite those present with the Island.
