Cuban Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment Wraps Up Official Portion of his Visit in Ottawa, Heads to Montreal

Ottawa, November 21, 2018.-  Mr. Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, Cuban Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment successfully concluded the official portion of his visit to Ottawa and traveled to Montreal to complete an extensive agenda.

At midday on Wednesday, Minister Malmierca met with his Canadian counterpart, the Hon. James Carr, Minister of International Trade Diversification. It was a cordial and fruitful meeting, during which both ministers highlighted the long-standing bilateral relations and underlined the significance of the economic and commercial ties, which have traditionally existed between the two countries.

Minister Malmierca explained the crucial role that foreign direct investment plays in the Cuban economy and its impact on building new trade flows. He also called for greater Canadian investments in Cuba´s strategic sectors, such as energy, tourism, the food industry and infrastructure, just to name a few, taking into account the enormous existing potentials.

In the morning, the Speaker of the Canadian Senate, the Hon. George Furey, had received Cuban Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment at Parliament Hill. Speaker Furey inquired about the goals of the Minister´s visit and reiterated his willingness to promote interparliamentary exchanges.

To conclude his program in Ottawa, Minister Malmierca gave an interview to The Hill Times newspaper. He underscored the importance of trade, cooperation and business ties between Canada and Cuba and talked about the potential business opportunities in the island.

On Wednesday evening, Minister Malmierca started in Montreal the last stage of his visit meeting with Mr. Jean Chretien, former Prime Minister of Canada. He also had a productive gathering with members of the Canada-Cuba Chamber of Commerce and Industry, headed by Ms. Nancy Lussier, President.
