The Cuban Son Practice has been declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

New Delhi- This Wednesday, December 10, 2025, in New Delhi, the practice of the Cuban Son was inscribed on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, coordinated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), during the 20th session of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee of this international organization, which is held in the city of New Delhi, India.
 The Cuban delegation at the event is composed of Sonia Virgen Pérez, President of the National Council for Cultural Heritage, Ambassador Juan Carlos Marsán and First Secretary Maiky Diaz. 
In her speech of praise and recognition, the President of Cultural Heritage of Cuba stressed that this is an essential element of the national cultural identity, which enjoys great vitality throughout the country and has extended its influence to the whole world. He recalled that since its birth in the eastern region of Cuba, this genre of musician-dancer is one of the basic expressions of Cuban music, with a high degree of hybridization of African and Spanish music. 
This declaration reaffirms the commitment of the Cuban State to safeguard the national cultural heritage, despite the intensification of US blockade measures against Cuba. 
The Cuban delegation welcomed the new inscriptions on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, especially those coming from our region, which reaffirm the richness, diversity and resilience of Latin American and Caribbean cultures.
