Addis Ababa, May 25, 2024.- Cuba's Ambassador to the African Union (AU), Lourdes A. Marrero Oro, participated on May 25 in the celebrations held at the headquarters of the continental organization in Addis Ababa on the occasion of Africa Day.
The origin of this celebration dates back to May 25, 1963 when 32 leaders of African states met in Addis Ababa to form the Organization of African Unity (OAU), today the African Union (AU).
This date is a reminder of African countries' struggle for independence, as well as an opportunity to highlight achievements and challenges for economic development, peace, security and human rights. This celebration also refers to the achievements of the continent and invites us to reflect on the challenges facing Africa in the near future.
For the majority of Africans, including those living abroad, Africa Day is a reason to unite and recognize the cultural diversity of the continent, as well as a date that reminds all Africans of the need to build a united, democratic and decolonized continent.
