Monrovia, January 22, 2018- In its digital version, the Daily Observer newspaper published an article entitled “Cuba grateful for Liberia´s role in advocacy to lift blockade”. Written by journalist Joaquin Sendolo, the text includes the main ideas expressed by the Chargé d'Affaires of Cuba in Liberia, Mr. Yordenis Despaigne Vera, within the framework of the celebration for the 59th anniversary of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution.
As mentioned in the content of the article, "Cuba express its gratitude to Liberia for being among the 191 nations that voted in the United Nations for the lifting of the blockade." He also mentioned that, according to the statements of the Cuban diplomat, "the blockade continues to be the main obstacle to the development of Cuba and a flagrant violation of the human rights of the Cuban people."
The journalist also echoed some of the examples that demonstrate how, despite the intensification of the blockade, the afflictions suffered by Hurricane Irma and the retreat in bilateral relations with the United States with the measures adopted by the Trump administration, Cuba has achieved notable social indicators such as "infant mortality of 4.1 per thousand live births, maternal mortality of 38% per 100 000 live births and a life expectancy of 78.45 years on average". He mentions in his writing the achievements of the Latin American School of Medicine in the training of health professionals for other countries, including Liberia.
Before concluding his text, he mentions the steps that took place during the Obama administration for the rapprochement between both countries, including the visit of Obama and his wife to Cuba. (CubaMinrex/EmbaCubaLiberia)
