I, Jan Edvin Christian Gustafsson, Danish citizen, scholar at the University of Copenhagen and writer, wish to express my firm opposition to United States’ blockade, also named embargo, against Cuba. As Latin Americanist scholar and specialist in Cuban studies with a personal knowledge of the Cuban society and of the Cuban immigrant community in Florida, I can assert that the embargo is a violation of the Cuban peoples’ human rights and an attack against Cuban economy. Furthermore, I consider it an anachronistic cold war leftover benefitting only narrow political interests of a small sector of the extreme right. The normalization of the Cuban-US relations, besides being an important condition for an improvement of Cuba’s economy, will be of mutual benefit for the two neighboring countries, not only economically and politically, but also as a part of their long-lasting tradition for cultural exchange.
