Declaration of the Barbados Cuba Friendship Association

The Barbados Cuba Friendship Association, once again condemn the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States and the inclusion of Cuba on the list of alleged state sponsors of terrorism, which have had a tremendous negative impact on the Cuban people.

This anachronic policy has been and continues to be the main obstacle to the Cuban economic and social development and constitutes a unilateral coercive measure that hinders the full enjoyment of human rights by the Cuban people. Never before have any people had to withstand such a long siege by the most powerful nation recorded in history. Moreover, never have any people resisted so great an aggression with such heroism, without capitulating, without renouncing their independence and sovereignty, or their right to construct the political, economic and social system of their choice.

Apart from the invaluable human losses, according to 2023- 2024 Cuban Annual Report to the UUNN, from March 1st, 2023 to February 29, 2024 the blockade caused material damages to Cuba estimated at more USD $5.06 billion which represents an impact of more than USD 421,000,000 a month, or more than USD 13,800,000 a day; or more than USD 575,683 per hour.

That blockade is a violation of international law and is contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter as well as constituting a transgression of the right to peace, development and security of a sovereign state.

Therefore, it is time to acknowledge that this is not just a US-Cuba issue but one crucial to the national interests of the Caribbean nations. The blockade not only affects Cuba since its legislation has a strong extraterritorial nature that limits the commercial and financial relations with third countries.

We want also to highlight the resilience of the Cuban people and its solidarity despite blockade. We reaffirm our commitment to raise our voices to demand that the U.S. government immediately lift the unjust economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed against Cuba and exclude Cuba from the arbitrary list of alleged state sponsors of terrorism.
