Havana, August 7, 2018. On occasion of the devastating effects of the magnitude 7 earthquake, which affected the island of Lombok, Nusa Tengara, Indonesia, on August 5, the president of the Councils of State and of Ministers of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, sent a message of condolences on behalf of the Cuban people and government, to the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo, which he extended to the families of the victims.
According to the information published by the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), on its official website, the number of fatalities amounts to 131, while 1 447 people were seriously injured and another 156 003 have been displaced. In relation to the material damages, total or partial damages are recorded to 42 239 houses and 458 school units.
Indonesia, located in the so-called Belt or Ring of Fire of the Pacific, which concentrates some of the most active areas of the world in terms of seismic and volcanic activity, has suffered the impact of two telluric movements of considerable magnitude in a week. The previous earthquake occurred on July 29 in the same locality, leaving a balance of 17 fatal victims and considerable material damage.
