Vienna, August 15, 2026 – The screening of the documentary “Anecdotes of Fidel,” by renowned American filmmaker Estela Bravo, was part of the tribute to the Commander-in-Chief organized by the Cuban Embassy in Austria as part of the activities marking the centennial of his birth. The event brought together representatives from various Austrian political parties and organizations, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Vienna, members of the Cuban community residing in Austria, and staff from the Cuban diplomatic mission.
Bravo’s film, winner of the First Prize at the Urbanworld Festival in New York, offers an intimate journey through the life and political career of Fidel Castro, combining images from Cuban archives with testimonies from Cuban and international figures such as Gabriel García Márquez, Alice Walker, Alfredo Guevara, Alicia Alonso, and Jesús Montané, among others. Regarded as an internationally respected documentary filmmaker, Bravo has dedicated several of her more than thirty films to the figure of the Cuban leader and to Latin American revolutionary movements.
The event is part of a series of activities organized by the Embassy throughout 2026 to celebrate the Comandante’s centennial, in which film has played a prominent role. Filmmakers such as Santiago Álvarez, founder of the ICAIC Latin American Newsreel and creator of the short film “Mi hermano Fidel” (1977); Roberto Chile, who followed the Comandante for decades and made several documentaries; and the American Oliver Stone, director of the documentary “Comandante” (2003), have contributed through their works to preserving the visual memory of Fidel Castro and his legacy. As Ambassador Pablo Berti Oliva stated, the work of these filmmakers helps keep the Cuban leader’s ideas and relevance alive among those in Europe who continue to defend the ideals of justice and sovereignty that he championed.
