Addis Ababa, September 19, 2023. The Embassy of Cuba in Ethiopia hosted the annual meeting with the Associations of solidarity with Cuba. During the meeting, various topics were discussed, including the recently concluded G-77+China Summit and the participation of Ethiopia, the current situation in Cuba, the tightening of the blockade and the upcoming VII edition of the African Continental Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba.
Ambassador Jorge Lefebre provided an update on the recent Summit of the Group of 77+China in Havana, in which a high-level delegation from Ethiopia led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen participated. He stressed that the presence for the first time of Mekonnen in the Caribbean island, opens new opportunities in bilateral relations between Cuba and Ethiopia, peoples to whom history and blood unite.
The ambassador officially announced the upcoming celebration of the African Continental Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, which will take place from October 25 to 27 in Johannesburg, South Africa, and urged the presidents of the associations present to participate in this event, raising the voices of Ethiopian solidarity.
In the voice of the presidents of the associations present, they reaffirmed their support for Cuba and its fight against the blockade, as well as the demand for the immediate removal of the island from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.
Dr. Feyesse Legesse, president of the Friendship of Friends Association, who recently visited Cuba with other ethiopians, said she had experienced firsthand the effects of the blockade by observing how the main sectors of the country suffer the heartbreaking impact of this policy. For her part, neonatologist Dr. Mulualem Gissesse, who received the annual award in the science sector in recognition of human services in Ethiopia, exalted her gratitude for the training received on the island and said, "I owe Cuba".
