Embassy of Cuba in Ottawa Celebrates Cuba Culture Day

Ottawa, November 8, 2018- On Thursday evening, the Embassy of Cuba in Ottawa hosted the celebration to commemorate Cuba National Culture Day.

Canadian authorities, members of the diplomatic corps, members of Cuba Solidarity movements and Cubans residing in Canada joined the festivity.

In her address, Cuban ambassador to Canada Josefina Vidal recalled that Cuba´s National Culture Day is commemorated every October 20 to mark the first time of the signing of our National Anthem in 1868, written and composed by Perucho Figueredo just a few days after the onset of the war for independence.

Amanda Moreno Sánchez, 10-year old Cuban girl and violin student at the Manuel Saumel Conservatory, opened the evening playing the Cuban national anthem.

To round off a memorable evening, Cuban artists Caridad Cruz (singer) and César Ricardo (guitarist), performed a concert, which included well-known songs, such as La Bayamesa, Yolanda and La tarde, as well as others with a more contagious rhythms like Chanchan and Soy Cubana. Attendees also enjoyed delicacies and drinks of the Cuban cuisine, an expression of the Cuban culture.
