Enrique Alemán MP meets with students in Belfast

Belfast, 25 February 2025 - Cuban MP Enrique Alemán Gutiérrez, director of the Cabildo Quisicuaba Project, held an emotional and inspiring meeting with students from Coláiste Feirste, the only secondary school that teaches in Irish in Belfast. During the visit, Alemán was accompanied by Dr Valia Rodríguez, a UK-based Cuban and member of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign in Birmingham.

The students receive lessons about Cuban history as part of their educational programme and have chosen José Martí, Che Guevara and Fidel Castro as world reference figures, showed a deep knowledge of the island and asked very pertinent questions. Among the topics addressed were the current threats facing Cuba, the impact of social networks on the Revolution and the interaction between religions, the state, social organisations and the community.

Enrique Alemán and Valia Rodríguez explained the impact of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba, gave an overview of the Cuban people's history of resistance and detailed the work of Proyecto Cabildo Quisicuaba, a community initiative that promotes social inclusion and solidarity on the island.

The meeting took place in an atmosphere of respect, interest and mutual admiration, reflecting the bonds of friendship between the peoples of Cuba and Northern Ireland. The Cuban Embassy in the United Kingdom thanks Coláiste Feirste for their hospitality and their commitment to the dissemination of knowledge about Cuba and its history.
