Addis Ababa, February 5, 2026.- The Ethiopian Parliament's Friendship Group with Cuba held a fraternal meeting with members of the Cuban Diplomatic Mission in Ethiopia, reaffirming the historic ties of friendship and cooperation between the two peoples and governments, as well as solidarity with Cuba in a context marked by the strengthening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government.
During the exchange, the Cuban Ambassador to Ethiopia, Meylin Suárez Álvarez, provided an overview of the high-level visits made in 2025 and the exchanges held with the Ethiopian Parliament. Among these, she highlighted the meeting between the Speaker of the Ethiopian Parliament, Tagesse Chafo and the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, as an expression of the strengthening of bilateral political dialogue.
The diplomat also highlighted the role played by the Ethiopian Parliament in calling for Cuba's removal from the unilateral list of state sponsors of terrorism, while explaining the current circumstances facing the Caribbean nation, exacerbated by the increase in unilateral coercive measures and the hostile rhetoric of the U.S. government against the island.
For her part, the Vice President of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, Dr. Yeshimbe Demissie, emphasized the group's representative nature, stating: "Today we are a group, but we represent millions of Ethiopians through us." She stressed that signing the call to remove Cuba from the list was not just the decision of a parliamentary group, but rather an expression of the will of the Ethiopian people.
The parliamentarians reaffirmed that Ethiopia respects the sovereignty of states and reiterated that the African nation will always stand with Cuba. They emphasized that the island is not alone and has broad international support in the face of the blockade and external pressures. They also highlighted the strength and resilience of the Cuban people, affirming that the struggle and solidarity continue.
