Vienna, March 24. The performance by Cuban musician José Portillo (@portillo_y_cauce) and the Brazilian trio Glauco Sölter (@glaucosolter) captivated the Viennese audience with an unusual blend of pure Cuban and Brazilian jazz.
The concert, which included pieces by the Trio and the Cuban pianist, such as “El que fue a Mantilla,” was based on a surprising blend of Cuban and Brazilian melodies and rhythms, featuring high virtuosity and improvisation.
Portillo and the Brazilian Trio met several years ago in Havana during the renowned Jazz Plaza International Festival. From that encounter, the idea of performing together emerged. This performance in Vienna, with the support of the Brazilian Embassy in Austria, marks the start of a tour that will also take them to Slovenia.
The audience enjoyed an evening of creativity and surprise in each of the pieces, featuring elements of Cuban and Brazilian music, creating distinct sounds and a unique style that demonstrates how the region’s culture—and jazz in particular—draws inspiration from the fusion of rhythms and forms native to our music.
