Addis Ababa, August 13, 2026.- The reach and recognition of Fidel Castro's ideology in Africa was the focus of today's commemoration at the Cuban Embassy in Ethiopia, marking the centenary of the birth of the historic leader of the Caribbean nation's Revolution.
Members of the diplomatic mission, along with Ethiopian filmmaker Negash Abdurahman, author of the documentary "Cuba in Africa," highlighted this legacy, emphasizing the struggle to end apartheid on the continent.
During the event, the feature film "Fidel is Fidel" by renowned Cuban filmmaker and cinematographer Roberto Chile was presented. The film compiles poignant images and pivotal moments in the life of the revolutionary leader (1926-2026).
Chile, who was Fidel Castro's personal cameraman for over three decades, combined audiovisual material and previously unseen photographs taken between 2005 and 2012 to showcase Castro's human side, daily life, and historical legacy.
During the event, Ethiopian graduates from Havana (Ethiopian Cubans) sent messages to the Cuban diplomatic mission in Addis Ababa expressing their eternal gratitude to Fidel Castro for opening the doors of the island and giving them the opportunity to be educated and grow into upstanding citizens.
They also recalled the military support provided in 1978 against external annexation attempts, with the deployment of Cuban combatants who, alongside local troops, defended Ethiopia's sovereignty. The Battle of Karramara sealed the ties between the two countries in blood, as 163 Cubans lost their lives in that conflict.
Other texts sent to the Cuban embassy stated that Fidel will always be in the hearts of Ethiopian-Cubans and the people of Ethiopia.
