FIFTH INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR FOR PEACE AND THE ABOLITION OF FOREIGN MILITARY BASES

The World Peace Council, the Cuban Movement for Peace and Sovereignty of the Peoples and the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, with co-sponsorship of the Organization of Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL, Spanish acronym), the Martin Luther King Jr. Center and the Oscar Arnulfo Romero Center for Reflection convoke peace organizations and fighters, pacifists and personalities committed with the idea that A Better World is Possible, to participate in the Fifth International Seminar for Peace and the Abolition of the Foreign Military Bases that will take place in Guantánamo, Cuba, on May 4-6, 2017.

The presence of foreign military bases of the United States imperialism and its NATO allies in numerous world countries, the majority of them imposed against the will of their peoples, is a clear threat to peace and world stability and a flagrant meddling in the internal affairs, lessening at the same time the independence and sovereignty of the nations where they have been installed.

As in the four previous issues, this International Seminar will be celebrated in the province with 117 square kilometers of its territory seized by the illegal occupation of a United States naval base that has become a center of torture and one of the most horrible violations of the human rights of the alleged terrorists imprisoned there for more than one decade.

This Fifth International Seminar will also take place in the context of the normalization process of relations between Cuba and the United States, among the essential aspects of which are the Cuban demand of the lifting of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba for more than half a century, and the return of the territory in Guantánamo, illegally occupied against the legitimate will of the Cuban people.

The Fifth Seminar will likewise take place at a time when a new offensive of imperialism and the Latin American oligarchies is being carried out against several progressive political and social processes in the continent such as in Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador. Making use of all the despicable acts and calumnies of politics and in the media, they pretend to cancel out the advances achieved by those governments in defense of the most oppressed classes and in addition disarticulate the integration process taking place in the region.

In this regard, the Fifth Seminar will once more confirm the validity of the Proclaim of Latin America and the Caribbean as Peace Zone, approved by all Heads of State and Government of the region, who met in Havana in January, 2014.

Those persons interested in attending the Fifth Seminar may address their communications to Silvio Platero Yrola, president of MovPaz, with the following email addresses: presidmp@enet.cu , movpaz@enet.cu y movpazri@enet.cu

Likewise, the participants that may wish it will have ten minutes to present papers or address the audience. It is requested that the texts be submitted to MovPaz with sufficient time in advance, in order to ensure the translation.

The AMISTUR CUBA S.A. Travel Agency of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP, Spanish acronym) will be in charge of ensuring the lodging, transportation and general logistics of the event.

The Program of the Fifth Seminar and offers of the tourist package prepared by AMISTUR for the participants are attached. Cuban Movement for Peace and Sovereignty of the Peoples
