The First Deputy Minister of Justice, Rosabel Gamón Verde, held an exchange with Mr. Jean-Luc Lemahieu, Director of the Division for Analysis and Public Affairs of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Vienna, May 25, 2023. As part of her work agenda in Vienna, the First Deputy Minister of Justice, Rosabel Gamón Verde, met with Mr. Jean-Luc Lemahieu, Director of the Division for Analysis and Public Affairs of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
During the meeting, the possibilities for cooperation between the Office and Cuba were discussed, as well as the country's commitment to the fight against the scourge of drugs, terrorism, human trafficking and organized crime.
The First Deputy Minister also visited the UNODC Laboratory, which provides scientific and forensic services to nearly 300 laboratories in 80 countries.
The laboratory, which was originally established to conduct scientific research on opium, cannabis and other internationally controlled substances, now ensures that internationally accepted standards for best forensic practices are available and accessible worldwide. It also enhances national forensic capacity and capabilities to meet internationally accepted standards of performance, and promotes the use of scientific and forensic data in strategic operations, policy and decision-making processes.
The First Deputy Minister learned first-hand about the work of the laboratory and had the opportunity to interact directly with the scientists working there.
The laboratory was created by the General Assembly in 1954 as the United Nations Narcotics Laboratory.
