Foreign Minister affirms that Cuba prioritizes children's rights

Havana, July 2, 2020.- The Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, affirmed this Thursday that the promotion and protection of the rights of children and adolescents is a priority for his country.

In his Twitter account, the chancellor referred to the fact that the island's achievements in this area are internationally recognized, including the United Nations Agencies, Funds and Programs that address these issues.

Just this week several of these organizations have alluded to the positive results of the Caribbean nation in preserving the well-being of children.

Regarding the global launch of the State of World Population 2020 report, the United Nations Population Fund (Unfpa) in Cuba highlighted that the Law protects Cuban girls from child marriage, while national reports on female genital mutilation are absent.

Likewise, at the annual session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), the charge of business of the Caribbean nation before the UN, Ana Silvia Rodríguez, addressed matters related to health services and free universal education.

The ambassador explained that Cuba has the 35th position among the countries with the lowest infant mortality in the world, with 5 per 1,000 live births, and a survival rate during the first five years of life of over 99 percent.

Another aspect that reflects the protection of children is the National Immunization Program, which despite the restrictions imposed by the US blockade, maintains and guarantees coverage for almost 100 percent, against 13 diseases.

Recently, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) also recognized the achievements of the largest of the Antilles in terms of its educational policies and the guarantee of inclusive and quality education.
