Cuba’s role in the struggle for Namibia’s independence was highlighted today during a warm and cordial meeting between Ambassador Sergio Vigoa de la Uz and His Excellency Hifikepunye Pohamba, the African nation’s second president.
During the exchange—held at the legendary freedom fighter's residence in the northern Ohangwena region—the diplomat addressed the difficult situation facing the Cuban people due to the U.S. government's oil blockade, which has subjected the island to a silent genocide.
The founding member of the SWAPO Party, who fought for nearly 30 years against South African colonial regimen, condemned the U.S. government's criminal blockade of the island while praising the role of Fidel’s homeland in steadfastly defending its independence and sovereignty.
Pohamba expressed gratitude for the Commander-in-Chief’s efforts in training thousands of Namibians in Cuba; these individuals returned as professionals in various fields to serve their nation—such as young Mire Christof, a graduate from the largest of the Antilles, who also took part in the meeting.
The African leader also acknowledged the work of the doctors providing services across all regions of Namibia as part of Cuban cooperation in the "Land of the Brave."
Vigoa de la Uz briefed the statesman on the progress of the "Namibians in Solidarity with Cuba" campaign, which, thanks to solidarity-based contributions, has raised a significant amount of money to purchase medical supplies and solar panels.
"Your legacy and that of the Founding Father have been the greatest inspiration for this people, who have not abandoned Cuba during the most difficult period of its history," the ambassador stated.
