Namibia urges support for Cuba amid US sanctions

WINDHOEK — Namibian Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has called on Namibians and corporate entities to support Cuba through a national solidarity campaign aimed at helping the Caribbean nation cope with humanitarian and economic challenges linked to long-standing U.S. sanctions.

Ngurare made the appeal during a courtesy visit by Cuban Ambassador to Namibia Sergio Vigoa de la Uz in Windhoek, said his office in a statement released on Sunday.

Namibian president calls United State energy blockade of Cuba as unacceptable

“We will continue to condemn the blockade of United State government against Cuba. Now that they have failed for more than six decades in their attempts to destroy Cuba, they have sunk to their lowest level by inflicting suffering on the Cuban people through sanctions against any country that wishes to send them oil and petrol. It is unacceptable, it is unfortunate”, said Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at the commemoration of the 48th anniversary of the Cassinga Massacre, held in the Omusati region.

Namibia is preparing to help Cuba

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Dr. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and the National Assembly Parliamentary Friendship group held an engagement with the Namibia–Cuba Friendship Association, led by Honorable Helmuth Kangulohi Angula (former member of Parliament), accompanied by other members of the Steering Committee.

On February 4th, 2021, the Government of Namibia ratified its proposal to nominate the “Henry Reeve” Cuban International Contingent of Doctors Specialized in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics, for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

Cuba and Namibia consolidate diplomatic relations

Ambassador Sergio Vigoa de la Uz paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of International Relations and Trade, H.E. Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, in which they agreed to develop economic collaboration at the level of political and diplomatic relations.

During the meeting, the diplomat expressed his gratitude for Namibia's continued support of the Cuban people in the regional and international arena, its rejection of the United States' economic, commercial, and financial blockade against Cuba, and its inclusion on the list of countries allegedly sponsoring terrorism.

Successful Visit to Namibia by Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz

The member of the Political Bureau and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz arrived in Namibia to attend the inauguration ceremony of new President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, an event that coincided with the celebrations for the country's 35th anniversary of independence and the establishment of diplomatic relations, which took place on March 21, 1990.
