HIT welcomes Ambassador to Zimbabwe and emphasizes ties with Cuba

Harare, February 10, 2026 – The Vice-Chancellor of the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT), Professor Quinton C. Kanhukamwe, today praised the collaboration with Cuba in science and technology upon receiving Ambassador Susellys Pérez Mesa.

The relations between the two countries in the areas of higher education and innovation are mutually beneficial and aligned with the 2030 Strategy presented by President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa, stated the head of HIT.

During the meeting on the institute's campus, the Cuban Ambassador briefed Kanhukamwe and other officials on the effects of the U.S.blockade and the recent executive order that seeks to intensify it by restricting fuel imports.

She also highlighted the historic ties between the African nation and the Caribbean island, established just two days after Zimbabwe's independence, and marked by 40 years of cooperation this year.

The Vice-Rector and the Head of Mission reviewed the status of ongoing projects with HIT, including their implementation phases, and identified other opportunities for collaboration.

The Ambassador, accompanied by Minister Counselor Luis Enrique González, toured areas of the university related to bilateral projects.

Kanhukamwe, along with his leadership team, expressed their gratitude for the Ambassador's visit and reiterated their commitment to taking the necessary steps to strengthen existing agreements.

Pérez Mesa praised the excellent state of relations between the two countries, reflected in the exchange of delegations in 2025, including the delegation of the President of the Cuban Parliament, Esteban Lazo Hernández, to Harare, as well as a special envoy from the President of Zimbabwe, two ministers and three deputy ministers to Havana.
