Addis Ababa, December 11, 2024.- The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) hosted the celebration of Arabic Language Day at its headquarters under the theme, "Embracing Innovation, Preserving Culture, Shaping the Digital Age".
The activity, supported by Arabic-speaking embassies, highlighted the importance of this language as it is spoken by more than 500 million people and recognized in 25 countries.
Mr Claver Gatete, Secretary-General of the Commission, stressed the importance of this language as one of the official languages of the United Nations.
Gatete noted that Arabic is a language of cultural richness and innovation, which has long served as a bridge between civilizations, enriching knowledge and fostering global dialogue.
The diplomatic corps accredited in the country, representatives of UNESCO, the African Union and students from Arab schools in the country participated in the activity.
