International Women's Day in Diplomacy celebrated in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, July 8, 2024.- Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Embassy of Cuba in Ethiopia, Natalys Dinza, participates in the activity for International Women in Diplomacy Day held at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), under the theme "Women, Peace and Security: An Exchange of Lessons Learned and Experiences in the Implementation of Resolution 1325".

The event, chaired by the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, H.E. Sahle-Work, was organized by the Women in Diplomacy in Ethiopia Network (WIDEN), which aimed to recall the significant improvements that have been made so far and the work that remains to be done to ensure that women have equal opportunities to lead and contribute in the field of diplomacy.

During her remarks, the President of Ethiopia highlighted the critical need for women to be fully represented in all aspects of diplomacy and decision-making, with their unique perspectives and approaches. She also pointed out that United Nations Security Council resolution 1325 heralds a better future for women. H.E. Sahle Work added that the resolution urges all actors to increase the participation of women and incorporate a gender perspective in all UN initiatives on peace and security.

The event was attended by the Executive Secretary of UNECA, H.E. Claver Gatete, the AU Special Envoy for Women, Peace and Security, H.E. Mme Bineta Diop and the Minister of Women and Social Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Dr. Ergogie Tesfaye.

The panels were led by the Special Representative and Head of the UN Women Liaison Office to the African Union and UNECA, Ms. Antonia Sodonon, the Executive Director of the National Association of Ethiopian Women, Ms. Saba Gebremedhin, the UN Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Ms. Hanna Tetteh and the Executive Director of the African Centre for Constructive Dispute Resolution of South Africa, Dr. Vasu Gounden. 

Ambassadors and diplomats from several countries, representatives of international organizations and other guests attended the event.
