In the framework of the celebration of the 43rd Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the republics of Cuba and Liberia, Cuba's Chargé d'Affaires, Yordenis Despaigne Vera, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Minister of Liberian Foreign Affairs, Mr. Elias Shoniyin, who received him in his office. The visit was also attended by Mr. Sie-Teba Neufville, assistant minister of the for American Affairs of Liberian Chancellery, and Carmen Maury Toledo, the second secretary of the diplomatic mission.
During the cordial meeting, the Cuban diplomat recalled some of the milestones that have marked the ties between Cuba and the West African nation since the establishment of diplomatic ties. Among them was Liberia's support for the adoption of resolutions against the US blockade against Cuba and the dispatch of a brigade of Cuban collaborators in October 2014 to combat the deadly epidemic of Ebola that hit the African country. He also recalled historical coincidences with the date such as the Victory of Playa Girón and a few days before the Declaration of the Socialist Character of the Cuban revolutionary process which, he said, continues the legacy of the eternal Commander Fidel Castro Ruz of solidarity, justice and sovereignty.
For his part, the Liberian dignitary thanked the meeting and stressed the resilience and firmness of the Cuban people, while also congratulating the anniversary. He also mentioned that relations are long-standing, since the emergence of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries of which he recalled Cuba and Liberia are founders. He pointed out that, thanks to the valuable presence of Cuban medical brigade in 2014, the reopening of the Cuban embassy in Liberia and the accreditation of the Liberian Ambassador to the Cuban government, these links have achieved greater scope, which will allow exploring areas of mutual interest and benefit.
