Ottawa, January 28, 2025 - The Cuban flag was raised for the first time at the Ottawa City Hall, seat of the government of the federal capital. This solemn event served to commemorate the 172nd Anniversary of the birth of the National Hero, the 66th Anniversary of the Triumph of the Revolution and the 80th Anniversary of bilateral relations with Canada.
The ceremony to raise the national flag was presided over by Ottawa City Councillor Riley Brockington, who referred to the relevance of José Martí in the history of Cuba and Latin America. He also emphasized the significance of the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the bilateral ties between our countries, while highlighting the willingness of the city authorities to continue contributing to the development of these ties.
On his part, Dany Tur de la Concepción, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Cuban Embassy, mentioned the relevance of the date for Cubans and the validity of Marti's thought in the work of the Cuban Revolution. Referring to the 80 years of uninterrupted relations with Canada, the diplomat pointed out the bilateral milestones reached in trade, investment and tourism. He also highlighted the stance taken by all Canadian governments against the economic blockade imposed by the U.S. He also described the decision of the new U.S. administration to include the island again in the list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism, as an act of total disrespect to the truth.
As part of the ceremony, the Mayor was presented with a bat bearing his signature, made by friend of Cuba Bill Ryan. These bats have special significance for Cuba, as they are one of the symbols of the struggle for the return of the Five Heroes imprisoned by the Empire. In addition, through the Cubacan Bats project, Ryan has donated hundreds of bats for baseball practice in Cuba.
Members of the Canadian Parliament, the Foreign Ministry, the Diplomatic Corps, Cuban residents and friends of Cuba attended the ceremony.
