Kuala Lumpur, June 13, 2026. The Malaysian national news agency, BERNAMA, and the Sarawak Tribune published the denunciation made by the Cuban Ambassador Yadira Ledesma Hernández of the United States' multidimensional aggression against Cuba that is multidimensional, ranging from economic and energy blockade to systematic threats of military action, provocation and diplomatic pressure.
Today's attack against Cuba could become tomorrow's attack against any country, especially in the Global South, where there is a strategic resource or a geopolitical motive of interest to imperial domination.
Since 1962, the U.S. has maintained a blockade that has become the most unjust, severe, and prolonged system of unilateral sanctions ever applied against an entire nation.
The economic, commercial, and financial blockade caused Cuba losses exceeding $7 billion last year, while the cumulative damage from the implementation of this policy over more than six decades amounted to $170.677 billion, according to a February 2025 report submitted to the United Nations.
Washington's maximum pressure policy has negatively impacted key indicators in Cuba, such as infant mortality, childhood cancer survival rates, and access to surgery. Infant mortality, which previously stood at 4.0 deaths per 1,000 live births, has increased to 9.9, while the survival rate for children with cancer has fallen from 85% to 65%. There is currently a waiting list of 100,000 patients for surgery, including 12,000 children.
These figures demonstrate that the collective punishment perpetrated by USA against Cuba constitutes an act of genocide.
Cuba has been suffering a real oil blockade, having received only one shipment of oil from Russia in the last six months. No state in the world could sustain an energy embargo of this magnitude without facing severe economic and social disruptions.
On January 29, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order allowing the imposition of tariffs on products imported into the United States from countries that directly or indirectly sell or supply oil to Cuba.
The current situation has once again has prompted Cuba toward resilience, innovation, and the application of science. Recently, Cuban crude oil has been successfully refined using a new methodology currently in the testing phase. The country has also accelerated the shift in its energy matrix with the installation of large solar parks to generate photovoltaic energy and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. These are also lessons for nations of the Global South.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called on Monday for the immediate lifting of US sanctions against Cuba, warning that their expansion was causing serious harm to the population and endangering lives.
“The fuel restrictions imposed since the beginning of 2016 and the recent tightening of extraterritorial sanctions, taken together, directly harm Cubans, especially the most vulnerable… This is unacceptable,” Türk stated.
The Global South must decide whether it accepts the aggression described as the new normal and remains silent in the face of injustice and flagrant violations of international law, or whether it raises its voice and takes concerted action to denounce such acts, defend peace, and offer international solidarity.
