Vienna, September 22. The iconic Cuban film “Memories of Underdevelopment,” by renowned director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, will be screened on October 2 as part of the closing event of the “Ibero-American Film Nights 2026” series, organized by the Cervantes Institute in Vienna since September 29, 2026.
The screening, which will feature English subtitles, is also part of the program of activities that the Cuban Embassy in Austria will carry out to celebrate Cuban Culture Day during the months of September and October, and offers a unique opportunity for the Austrian public and the Ibero-American community in Vienna to enjoy one of the most acclaimed works of cinema in Cuba and Latin America.
“Memories of Underdevelopment” (1968) offers a sharp and profound portrait of Cuban society following the triumph of the Revolution, through the eyes of Sergio, a bourgeois intellectual who decides to remain in the country while his family and friends emigrate. Considered a masterpiece of Latin American cinema, the film has been studied at prestigious film schools and has received numerous international awards, earning a place on various lists of the best films in the history of Ibero-American cinema.
