The Hague, March 10, 2025. The new permanent representative of Cuba to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Eva Yelina Silva Walker, presented her Credentials to the Director General, Fernando Arias.
The ceremony took place at the headquarters of the international organization and was also attended by the Deputy Director General, the Director of External Relations and the second head of the Cabinet.
During the exchange, the Cuban ambassador ratified Cuba's commitment to general and complete disarmament, and highlighted the importance of promoting international cooperation in the use of chemistry for peaceful purposes. She also denounced the effects of the US blockade against the island, including on the application of the Convention, in particular its Article XI.
The OPCW is the implementing body of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which entered into force on April 29, 1997. It has 193 Member States and its mission is to oversee the global effort to permanently and verifiably eliminate chemical weapons.
Cuba has been a State Party to the Convention since May 29, 1997.
