Suva, October 10, 2020. The President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, sent a congratulatory message to his counterpart from the Republic of Fiji, Major General (Retired) Jioji Konusi Konrote, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the independence of that Pacific Island State.
The Cuban Head of State ratified "the will to expand the ties of friendship and cooperation between both countries".
Likewise, the Cuban Head of Government, Manuel Marrero Cruz, extended "cordial congratulations" for such an important commemoration and reiterated his country's solidarity with Fiji, in a message sent to the Prime Minister, Honorable Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama.
On October 10, 1970, after almost a century of British colonial presence, the island nation achieved its independence. As part of the festivities, the award ceremony of the Commemorative Medal "50th anniversary" took place this week, for recognizing distinguished personalities with relevant contributions to the country. Traditional religious and cultural activities were celebrated in the communities. The official ceremony will be held at the State House, preceded by a military parade.
