Beirut, January 9, 2019. The President of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri received today the new Ambassador of Cuba, Alexander Pellicer Moraga.
During the fraternal meeting, both parties recognized the good state of bilateral relations and expressed the will to continue strengthening the ties between the respective Parliaments, while highlighting the collaboration they maintain in different forums and multilateral events.
In view of the interest shown by Mr. Berri, the Ambassador gave a brief explanation on the economic situation in Cuba and the damages caused by the blockade imposed by the US, which today constitutes the main obstacle to the economic and social development of the island. Pellicer Moraga said that after President Trump's arrival at the White House, economic and financial sanctions against Cuba had intensified.
The Cuban diplomat also referred to the process of drafting and approving the new Constitution, and put it as an example of participatory democracy that is applied in Cuba.
The President of Parliament praised the resistance of Cuba and the outstanding role it plays in the international arena, also highlighted the work of Cuban doctors around the world, particularly in the fight against Ebola in West African countries. Berri recalled with emotion his visit to Cuba and the meeting with the historical leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro Ruz. (Embacuba Líbano)
