Vienna, 6 November 2019. The Square of the United Nations, in front of the headquarters of this International Organization in Vienna, was the scenario of an extensive popular gathering, which demanded the end of the blockade that the United States has been imposing for almost 60 years against Cuba.
The demonstrators who were summoned by "ÖKG", the Austria-Cuba Friendship Association carried posters and flags and expressed public support for the draft resolution entitled “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”, which Cuba is submitting at the United Nations General Assembly for the twenty-eighth time, on 6 and 7 November.
In addition to ÖKG,representatives of "CubaVa", the Association of Cubans Residing in Austria, the Communist Youth of Austria (KJÖ, by its German initials) and other solidarity organizations from Venezuela, Chile, the Philippines, Germany and other countries participated. The event is part of the "Unblock Cuba!" campaign, which is taking place in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, launched by the newspaper "Junge Welt" and 30 other organizations and institutions from these three countries. It includes public and media actions rejecting the blockade.
At the event, ÖKG´s President Michael Wögerer denounced the intensification of the blockade measures by President Trump Administration and the effects of these measures on the Cuban people and third countries, due to their extraterritorial scope. He reiterated the support to Cuba by the friends of Austria and the international solidarity movement.
